This One Feels Just Right Exhibition / “Cluasag Chair”The Six Cities Design Festival 2007This chair was commissioned and exhibited in the spirit of the Goldilocks story as members of the public were invited to try out various extraordinary chairs placed in a format of a woodland trail. Skilled designer makers from across the Highland & Islands using a variety of styles and techniques participated in this event as part of The Six Cities Design Festival. The “Cluasag* Chair” was formed by glass sandcasting. This process involves casting glass into special casting sand, allowing every detail to be picked-up and represented in the sand mould. Giant ladles are used to poured molten directly from the furnace at 1250 degrees and this creates the highly textured large glass components that make up the chair. “ ‘Cluasag Chair’ is beautiful and challenging playing with transparency, fragility and the surrounding environment. We choose to confront the idea of comfort and support by using a material that is hard, rigid and cool to the touch.” Although the cushion forms do not yield or provide the anticipated ‘comfort’ feeling one expects from a conventional chair, the public will see that the glass chair is gloriously tactile, encouraging curiosity and interaction. * `Clusag’ is cushion in Gaelic |
